Media Advisory - Hockey Education Reaching Out Society graduates Toronto class of 32 young HEROS

TORONTO, March 2 /CNW/ - A group of kids from the Regent Park area will
graduate from the Hockey Education Reaching Out Society (HEROS) progam on
Monday March 5, taking centre ice at the Moss Park arena for a celebratory
final game of the winter season, an awards ceremony and medal presentation.
HEROS is graduating a class of 32 students, all between seven and
13-years-old, from schools in the Regent Park area. The HEROS program uses
hockey as a catalyst to attract youth to a program offering them support for
education, self-esteem building and life skills training. Kids were selected
to participate in this year's hockey camp with the help of the teachers and
youth & family workers at the Toronto District School Board. The 32
participants were identified as high-risk youth who would benefit from the
HEROS program and who might not otherwise get the opportunity to experience
the great game of hockey.
HEROS started in 2000 using hockey, soccer, and education to help
Downtown Eastside elementary school students in Vancouver with challenging
backgrounds learn academics, life skills, and self-esteem. Since then, HEROS
has worked with more than 70 boys and girls from Toronto's economically
challenged neighbourhoods and more than 700 children nationally. With a
$300,000 donation from TELUS, HEROS brought the program to Toronto in October,
2005, making the future friendly for inner-city kids.
