NEW WESTMINSTER, BC, Aug. 26 /CNW/ - The opposite of a "Grand Opening", a
"Grand Closing" event will take place Wednesday at the Interfor Queensboro
sawmill site to mark the plant's permanent closure. The event starts at
11:30 am. The media and the public are welcome. In the last year, more than
13,000 forest industry jobs have been lost in the province and more than 50 BC
wood-processing plants have closed since 2001. The Interfor Queesboro event is
one in a series of 'grand closings' over the last several months, marking the
loss of jobs and the impact on local economies of the forestry and
manufacturing crisis.
Speakers will include USW Wood Council chairperson Bob Matters, NDP
Labour Critic Chuck Puchmayer, USW Local 1-3567 president Manjit Sidhu and BC
Federation of Labour President Jim Sinclair.

The USW is Canada's most diverse union, representing more than
280,000 men and women working in every sector of the economy.
