Media Advisory - Essex paramedics take information picket to Essex Civic Centre

ESSEX, ON, March 29 /CNW/ - Essex paramedics are in the second week of
their campaign to raise public awareness of the turmoil in local EMS services.
The paramedics, who are represented by the Service Employees
International Union, Local 1.on, have held public information pickets in
Tecumseh, Leamington, and Kingsville. Tomorrow they will assemble at the Essex
Civic Centre.
"We are going to continue our information pickets for as long as it takes
to get this mess cleaned up," says Ian Nash, a Sun Parlour Ambulance Services
- Essex Division paramedic and SEIU chief steward. "EMS services in Essex have
been a mess since county council stated more than a year ago that it may
consolidate EMS services."
The consequence, Nash says, is that since their collective agreement
expired in March 2006, Sun Parlour Ambulance Services has remained unwilling
to return to the negotiating table.
Instead, Sun Parlour is insisting on labour arbitration, which will cause
further delays, Nash says.
"SEIU paramedics are resolved - after all this time - that we are
sticking to our campaign to inform the public of what is happening in EMS
services in their community," Nash says.
The issues the paramedics are delivering to the public are that there is
confusion in EMS service delivery because of dissimilar employment contracts
between the four regional EMS providers, divergent health and safety standards
from one provider to another, as well as unnecessary spending caused by
duplications in EMS administration in the region.
The paramedics are bringing their message to the public on their own
time.

SEIU Local 1.on represents 42,000 health care workers throughout Ontario.
SEIU Canada represents 95,000 workers across Canada.
