Media Advisory - Dewey Decimal gets a new home: Centennial College to open library and academic facility

TORONTO, Aug. 24, 2011 /CNW/ - Centennial College will mark the completion of its visionary plan for a new library and academic facility at Progress Campus with an official opening ceremony on Friday, August 26 at 10 am.

The event will be attended by representatives from key funding agencies, including the Hon. John Milloy, Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities, Roxanne James, MP for Scarborough Centre, and the Hon. Margarett Best, MPP for Scarborough-Guildwood, among other special guests.

The $52.5-million project is supported by the Knowledge Infrastructure Program (KIP), a federal-provincial initiative to renew Canada's college and university campuses. Designed by Diamond + Schmitt Architects, the 103,500-square-foot building features a full-service library that replaces a smaller facility, as well as 22 classrooms, lab space and a 200-seat lecture theatre.

Built to LEED Gold certification standards, the four-storey structure recycles its gray water, supports vegetation on its green roof and features a spectacular 16.5-metre-high bio-wall of live plants that can remove indoor airborne contaminants.

The library offers contemporary technology with both in-house and remote access to digital resources, as well as print and visual media collections. The learning-centred environment is open, dynamic and physically adaptable to accommodate various student needs.

Members of the media are cordially invited to observe the ribbon-cutting ceremony and take part in a tour of Scarborough's newest landmark.
