Media advisory - Communities across Canada Shred Together to Fight Fraud and Identity Theft and to Give a Hand Up to Senior Victims

OTTAWA, March 22 /CNW Telbec/ - To mark the end of Fraud Prevention
Month, Capital One and Shred-it are teaming up to sponsor the National
Canadian Community Shred(R) event in over twenty cities across the country on
Saturday March 31. Citizens are invited to bring all the unwanted personal
documents they can carry to local events. Shred-it will, at no charge,
securely shred their documents and then recycle the paper.
Participation in this year's Community Shred(R) event will also benefit
seniors as Capital One is pledging a nickel for every kilo of documents
shredded ('nickel a kilo challenge') at events nationwide to be donated to
SeniorBusters, a group of senior volunteers that supports PhoneBusters by
providing counsel and education to senior victims of identity theft/fraud.
The media are invited to come out and cover their local Community
Shred(R) event that will be taking place from 10AM to 2PM local time (and
bring along any documents you want to safely dispose of as well).
The Community Shred(R) event allows for Canadians to take preventative
action by securely disposing of personal information. While their documents
are being safely shredded, participants can take advantage of information on
how to avoid fraud and identity theft provided by Capital One and Shred-it.
Members of local police and other community leaders will be on site as
well to help answer public questions about this very important issue.
Identity theft is a crime that can affect anyone in any community.
Unfortunately, many Canadians leave themselves open to victimization. Personal
information left in the trash can be enough for "dumpster divers" to steal an
identity; this is why Shred-it and Capital One strongly recommend action and
awareness in order to empower Canadians on the issue.
Last year's event attracted thousands of Canadians who came out to shred
their personal documents and do their part in fighting identity theft and
fraud.
