The diversion of chemical precursors destined for clandestine labs is a
global problem. Over the past years, methamphetamine labs have represented
approximately 60 percent of all clandestine labs seized in Canada. Ontario has
the second highest concentration of clandestine synthetic drug lab activity in
Canada.
Recognizing this threat, the RCMP established the National Chemical
Diversion Program in 2001. Its mission is to educate and train chemical
producers, distributors and retailers to recognize the tell-tale signs of
synthetic drug traffickers that are obtaining chemicals for illegal production
of controlled substances and limit the accessibility of precursors.
Editors/Producers Note: A complete meth lab (non-functioning) will be on
view at the press conference as well as RCMP subject matter experts will be
available for one on one interviews.
Due to space limitations, all National Chemical Diversion Awareness
Conference sessions are closed to the media.
