OTTAWA, March 29 /CNW Telbec/ - Ottawa-area parents, child care providers
and advocates will join arms on the sidewalk of the Portage Bridge tomorrow,
March 30, to protest a $1 billion cut to early learning and child care.
Child care is about to suffer a major blow, as Stephen Harper's
cancellation of federal-provincial child care agreements takes effect on
Saturday, March 31.
WHAT: Gathering to protest $1 billion federal funding cut to child care
WHERE: Portage Bridge (linking Wellington Street in Ottawa with
Boulevard Maisonneuve in Gatineau)
WHEN: 9:00 a.m., Friday March 30, 2007
WHO: Parents, child care providers and advocates as part of Code Blue
for Child Care's campaign. They will be available to speak about
child care in Ottawa, where 10,000 children are waiting for care.
WHY: The $1 billion cut is a serious setback to building a
cross-Canada child care system. Spanning the Quebec-Ontario
border highlights the difference between Quebec's comprehensive,
high-quality accessible child care program and the patchwork that
exists in Ottawa - and throughout Ontario.
Code Blue is a Canada-wide campaign to build a real pan-Canadian child
care system. The campaign brings together national, provincial and territorial
child care organizations, labour, women's and social justice groups along with
Canadians from all walks of life. Find out more at www.buildchildcare.ca.
