Media Advisory - CAW to Elect Top Union Officers at Constitutional Convention

QUEBEC CITY, Aug. 17 /CNW/ - More than 1000 CAW members, staff and
special guests will gather in Quebec City for the union's 9th Constitutional
Convention to elect the three top officers and debate the policy direction of
the union, Tuesday, August 18 to Friday, August 21 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at
the Centre de Congres.
CAW President Ken Lewenza will stand for re-election, as will Quebec
Director Jean-Pierre Fortin, while a successor to National Secretary-Treasurer
will be elected, replacing Jim O'Neil, who will retire after an 18-year tenure
in the position. O'Neil is the union's longest standing officer.
The theme of this year's convention is: "challenges, resistance,
opportunity, renewal," with a particular focus on building an inclusive labour
movement in difficult economic times. Central to this goal will be expanding
the role of young workers in the union, increasing community outreach,
including working more closely with new Canadians, temporary and immigrant
workers and workers of colour.
Delegates representing local unions from coast to coast to coast will
have a chance to debate and vote on union policies, as laid out in the CAW
Constitution.
The Convention will include addresses from the following speakers at the
approximate times below.
