A Buy Canadian policy for public purchases is one of the many tools
governments have at their disposal to stem the loss of good manufacturing jobs
in Canada, said CAW President Buzz Hargrove.
"We just witnessed a near record total of 32,000 manufacturing jobs lost
in the month of July alone," said Hargrove. "Our governments, at all levels,
need to be held accountable for these losses and start finding ways to support
manufacturing workers in Canada."
Since the campaign was launched in the spring, the union's "Buy
Canadian-Build Communities" resolution has been brought to debate in a number
of municipalities across the province, and passed by city councils in Oshawa,
Thorold and Woodstock.
Copies of the Buy Canadian-Build Communities resolution and CAW
information leaflet are available upon request.
