WHAT: Rally to keep Canfor Mill
WHERE: 430 Canfor Ave., New Westminster
WHEN: 12:30 p.m., Thursday Dec. 6
WHO: Members of United Steelworkers, NDP labour critic and others
NEW WESTMINSTER, BC, Dec. 5 /CNW/ - Members of the United Steelworkers'
(USW) Local 1-3567 at Canfor's Panel and Fibre mill will soon be out of work
unless action is taken now.
Despite being recently commended by Canfor Management on their commitment
to the operation, which has resulted in rising sales and new markets, 125
employees face imminent permanent closure.
The USW has urged BC Premier Gordon Campbell to help keep the mill so it
will continue to produce environmentally-friendly products from wood waste.
The USW says the mill should be an essential part of BC's Green Plan to reduce
and recycle into useful products, rather than burn and bury.
On Thursday (December 6) a rally will be held near the mill at 430 Canfor
Avenue in New Westminster.
Speakers will include USW Western Canada Director Stephen Hunt, NDP
Labour Critic Chuck Puchmayer (New Westminster), and BC Federation of Labour
Secretary Treasurer Angie Schira.
The event will start at 12:30 pm at:
430 CANFOR AVENUE
- take Highway 1 to Burnette South exit
(turn right if approaching northbound on Burnette)
- turn left on Braid and cross railway tracks
- proceed two blocks and turn left on Canfor Avenue
The USW is Canada's most diverse union, representing more than 280,000
men and women working in every sector of the economy.
