Media Advisory - Canadians make space for astronomy



    OTTAWA, Jan. 6 /CNW Telbec/ - The Canada Science and Technology Museum is
pleased to host the Canadian launch of the International Year of Astronomy
2009 (IYA2009), a global celebration of astronomy and its contributions to
society and culture.
    With the theme The Universe, Yours to Discover, IYA2009 marks the 400th
anniversary of the first astronomical observations through a telescope by
Galileo.

    
    What:     Canadian launch of the International Year of Astronomy

    Where:    Canada Science and Technology Museum
              1867 St. Laurent Blvd., Ottawa
              Canada in Space exhibition

    Highlights include:

    - The national release of an illustrated Mi'kmaq story of seasons and
      astronomy by Elders Lillian Marshall and Murdena Marshall, from the
      Mi'kmaq communities of Potlotek and Eskasoni, in collaboration with
      Cape Breton University.

    - Science magazine's 2008 Science Breakthrough of the Year Runners-Up,
      Canadian researchers Christian Marois (National Research Council) and
      René Doyon (Université de Montréal) explaining their epoch-making
      discovery of a triple-exoplanet system.

    - Discover the many opportunities to have an engaging astronomy
      experience varied enough to appeal to everyone - Star Parties,
      lectures, art, music, and museum events, and brand new displays and
      presentations that will enhance your appreciation of the heavens for
      years to come.
