Media Advisory - Buzz Hargrove to march with Chief Phil Fontaine, Assembly of First Nations in Ottawa tomorrow

TORONTO, June 28 /CNW/ - CAW President Buzz Hargrove will be marching
alongside Assembly of First Nations Chief Phil Fontaine in Ottawa for the
First Nations National Day of Action on June 29, calling on government to take
steps to eradicate First Nations poverty and find peaceful resolutions to land
claims.
"It's shameful to see anyone in this country living in such third world
conditions today," said Hargrove. Currently, one in four First Nations
children live in poverty and more than one third of First Nations households
with children are overcrowded.
"I am joining with the Assembly of First Nations to tell our government
that this is unacceptable and immediate action must be taken to right hundreds
of years of abuse," Hargrove said.
The march begins at Ottawa City Hall, Festival Plaza, 110 Laurier Avenue
West and will end up at Victoria Island, the traditional land of the Algonquin
Nation. Buzz Hargrove will be speaking at 1 pm at Victoria Island.
Other speakers include: Grandfather William Commanda of the Kitigan Zibi
Reserve, Elder Elmer Couchene, Chair of the AFN Elders Council, Hassan
Yussuff, Secretary-Treasurer of the Canadian Labour Congress, federal
politicians and others.
Earlier this year, Hargrove wrote to Prime Minister Harper, condemning
his treatment of First Nations peoples and for abandoning the Kelowna Accord,
pledged by the previous federal government.
