Media Advisory - Astronaut Harrison Schmitt will speak to earth science student workshop finale in Sudbury, Ontario

TORONTO, May 13 /CNW/ - Dr. Harrison 'Jack' Schmitt, an astrogeologist
who served on the Apollo 17 mission to the moon, will give the keynote dinner
address on Friday, May 15 in conjunction with the Prospectors and Developers
Association of Canada's Student-Industry Mineral Exploration Workshop (S-IMEW)
in Sudbury, Ontario.
The title of Schmitt's presentation is Return to the Moon - Energy at the
Space Frontier and he will discuss the possibility of mining helium-3 on the
moon to provide a rich energy source for Earth and for future exploration of
space.
Schmitt, the lunar module pilot of the final mission in the Apollo
program, is one of just 12 people to have walked on the moon and the only
geologist.
He chairs the NASA Advisory Council and serves as an adjunct professor of
engineering physics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he is a
consultant engaged in research with the Fusion Technology Institute, studying
the feasibility of using helium-3 as a future source of energy. Helium-3 is a
non-radioactive isotope of helium that is rare on Earth but plentiful on the
moon.
The Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada's S-IMEW program
provides 24 top geoscience students from across Canada with an intensive
two-week workshop on mineral exploration and mining. A list of the students
participating in this year's workshop and their universities is available at
www.pdac.ca/students/simew.
