Media Advisory - Actor and Activist Danny Glover attending tonight's Blue Jays game to support low wage stadium workers

Danny Glover takes time away from the Toronto International Film Festival
to support the efforts of concession workers at the Rogers Centre to
improve their working conditions by forming a union with UNITE HERE

    TORONTO, Sept. 11 /CNW/ -

What: Danny Glover to speak with Rogers Centre concession workers
at Tuesday night's game between the Toronto Blue Jays and
                 the New York Yankees

Who: Actor and Activist, Danny Glover
Alex Dagg, Canadian Co-Director, UNITE HERE

    When: Starting at 8:45 pm

Where: Beginning at the Gate 2 entrance of the Rogers Centre and
then on to the 100 level concessions area

Why: Danny Glover has been working closely with UNITE HERE across
North America to raise the standards for low-waged hotel and
food service workers like those at the Rogers Centre.
Glover, who attended a union rally outside Rogers
Headquarters in August to draw attention to the situation
facing these low waged workers, is combining his love of the
game and his labour activism while in Toronto for the film
                 festival.

Background: At the end of July, concession workers at the Rogers Centre
began a union organizing drive with UNITE HERE. The workers
are employed by Sportservice who provides concession
services at the Rogers Centre. Concessions workers at the
Rogers Centre, many of whom earn just above minimum wage,
are some of the lowest paid stadium workers in Toronto. The
Rogers Centre is owned by Rogers Media which also owns the
                 Toronto Blue Jays.

On Friday, August 10th, UNITE HERE filed charges at the
Ontario Labour Relations Board against both Rogers Media and
Sportservice, detailing violations of the Labour Relations
                 Act.

UNITE HERE represents 50,000 hotel, food service, garment
and manufacturing workers across Canada, and 450,000 across
North American, including workers at 75 sports venues. UNITE
HERE has members at some of sports most venerable locations,
including Fenway Park, Jacobs Field and Yankee Stadium.
