VANCOUVER, March 7 /CNW/ - Starting at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, members of the
United Steelworkers (USW) will distribute leaflets outside General Motors
Place to inform the public about the actions of former Mexican president
The action will coincide with a live event featuring professional speaker
and leadership coach Anthony Robbins. Robbins and Fox were featured at a
similar event earlier this week in Ottawa.
Union members will provide information that Fox's government, whose reign
has been criticized by Amnesty International for abuses of power, human rights
violations and violations of workers and unions' rights, forcibly removed the
democratically elected leader of the National Union of Mining and
Metallurgical Workers of Mexico (Los Mineros) Napoleon Gomez. The removal came
after Gomez protested the deaths of 65 miners at Grupo Mexico's Pasta de
Conchos mine in Coihuila state. Gomez called the deaths "industrial homicide"
and called on the federal secretary of labour and social security to resign.
Gomez was then prosecuted under trumped-up charges.
"We think that the public attending this worthwhile event has the right
to know about former President Fox, the types of human rights violations that
took place during his regime and what his government did to the Los Mineros
leader in Mexico," said USW Western Canada Director Steve Hunt.
"We hope that people will think about these issues as they listen to Fox.
We hope they'll join our union in asking their MPs to condemn the persecution
of Napoleon Gomez."
Gomez is in Canada awaiting a safe return to Mexico once his family's and
personal security can be assured.
The GM Place event is sponsored in part by the Vancouver Board of Trade
and some of BC and Canada's most high profile associations, businesses and
media interests, including Investors Group, the Certified General Accountants
of BC, the Globe and Mail, BC Business Magazine, CKWX News 1130, and 96.9 JACK
