Media Advisory - 50th Anniversary of the loss of five RCMP officers on Lake Simcoe



    NEWMARKET, ON, June 5 /CNW/ - On Saturday, June 7, 2008 the members of
the RCMP and the RCMP Veterans' Association will hold a 50th Anniversary
Memorial Ceremony to honour five RCMP officers who lost their lives in the
line of duty.
    On the 7th of June, 1958, the five RCMP members left the shores of Lake
Simcoe in an RCMP vessel on a routine patrol and did not return. Drowned on
duty that evening were:

    
        Corporal Herbert M. SMART, age 33 with 15 years service
        Constable Glen F. FAROUGH, age 22 with 2 years service
        Constable Maurice MELNYCHUK, age 21 with 2 years service
        Constable David M. PERRY, age 19 with one year service
        Constable George H.E. RANSOM, age 21 with one year service

    The media as well as the general public is invited to be part of this
historic Memorial Ceremony, highlighted by the unveiling of a plaque honouring
the memory of these five officers.

    In attendance will be the Commanding Officer of "O" Division, members of
the fallen officers' families, RCMP employees and their families, RCMP
Veterans and dignitaries.
