Media Advisory - 3,500 Adult ESL postcards to be delivered to Premier McGuinty during UNESCO Adult Learners Week (Sept 1-8)

TORONTO, Sept. 4 /CNW/ - Students and Instructors from
provincially-funded Adult English as a Second Language are holding a press
conference to deliver 3,500 postcards to Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty.
September 1-8 is UNESCO Adult Learners Week, an event not officially
celebrated in Ontario. September 8th is also International Adult Literacy Day.
The 3,500 postcards ask the provincial government to provide adequate
funding for Adult ESL programs. Provincially-funded Adult ESL programs do not
receive funding to pay for classroom space. This puts programs in jeopardy
across the province.
The postcards also ask the provincial government to provide funding to
run childcare for students who attend Adult ESL classes. Approximately two
thirds of program participants are women.
About 80,000 adults attend provincially-funded Adult ESL programs each
year. The programs, offered by over 30 school boards across the province, are
funded through the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration with $50M
in funding annually.
"Adult ESL programs do not receive funding to pay for classroom space
(caretaking, heat, and electricity). This puts programs in jeopardy. The
Waterloo Region District School Board recently voted to close its Adult ESL
programs because of funding shortfalls. The ball could keep rolling," says
Graham Hollings of the Campaign for Stable Funding of Adult ESL Classes.
"Adult ESL programs play a vital role in our communities, helping people
to actively participate in their communities. They need adequate funding,"
says John Campey of the Community Social Planning Council of Toronto.
