Medavie Blue Cross relocating to accommodate expansion

DARTMOUTH, NS, Sept. 4 /CNW/ - Medavie Blue Cross announced today it will
be relocating to a new office space in 2009. With the relocation will come the
sale of its building on Spectacle Lake Drive in the City of Lakes Business
Park and tenancy in a new "green" building being constructed by the Armour
Group on Brownlow Avenue in the same area.
"I applaud Medavie Blue Cross and the Armour Group for creating a green
workplace that will be healthy for employees and friendly to our environment,"
said Mayor Peter Kelly. "As one of the most respected businesses in our region
and the entire country, Medavie Blue Cross has shown that it is possible to
grow and thrive while being leaders in environmental stewardship."
Medavie Blue Cross has experienced substantial growth in the past few
years and has outgrown its current location. While the majority of the
company's Dartmouth staff work from the Spectacle Lake Drive location, for the
past two years they have also occupied space in a second location on Brownlow
Avenue. Medavie Blue Cross now employs 267 people in its Dartmouth offices.
"We want to offer our employees a healthy work environment that will
accommodate all employees under one roof and accommodate expansion if future
needs arise," said Ruth Rappini, Vice President, Organization Development for
Medavie Blue Cross.
The Armour Group will construct its five-storey, 125,000 square foot
building to Green Building Standards to meet the requirements of Leadership in
Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, which would make it the
first major commercial LEED Certified office building in the Atlantic
Provinces. To achieve LEED certification, the building must meet numerous
guidelines set out by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGB). The result will
be a building that conserves water and energy and will offer a healthy and
comfortable work environment for its occupants.
A.M. (Ben) McCrea, P. Eng., Chairman of the Armour Group says,
"LEED-certified buildings are the future for the building development industry
in North America. We are proud to be embarking on this new and exciting
venture that will provide a healthy work space for tenants and be kind to our
environment."
