Measures to limit the spread of firearms - ONTARIO BACKS QUEBEC

MONTREAL, June 15 /CNW Telbec/ - The Premier of Québec, Mr. Jean Charest,
as well as the Minister of Justice and Minister of Public Security, Mr.
Jacques P. Dupuis, are highly satisfied with the support of the government of
Ontario for Québec's initiatives in limiting the spread of firearms.
The Attorney General, Mr. Michael Bryant, was present at a press
conference held today at Dawson College. At this time the bill on the safety
of individuals, presented the same day in the National Assembly together with
accompanying complementary measures, was explained in detail.
"The presence of the Attorney General of Ontario is evidence of his
government's interest in increased control of firearms in the country. In this
sense he shares our government's preoccupation with the constant improvement
in public safety," underscored Mr. Charest.
"We are delighted with such important support in this matter of priority.
Having also been visited by firearm-related tragedies, Ontario is aware of the
necessity of moving forward in order to better protect our fellow citizens.
The presence of Michael Bryant is a symbol of this support," added Mr. Dupuis.
"I sincerely hope that with their combined efforts the governments of
Ontario and Québec will be in a position to prevent the types of tragedies
that have occurred, both here at Dawson College and in Toronto," pointed out
the Attorney General of Ontario, Michael Bryant. "Ontario's response to armed
criminality is organized justice, which calls upon an interprovincial
collaboration in eliminating the supply of illegal firearms at all its
sources," he added.
The Premier of Québec concluded with: "Representing more than 60% of the
Canadian population, Québec and Ontario will combine their efforts in
petitioning the Canadian government for modifications in Canada's Firearms Act
and in reiterating our respective positions concerning the Canadian Firearms
Registry."
