Mealtime a snooze for most Canadians



    
    We're in a rut, bored or going through the motions, says survey
    commissioned by VH Sauces
    

    TORONTO, Aug. 19 /CNW/ - Two thirds of Canadians say that dinnertime is
just another meal they drop on the table, that they are bored serving the same
few recipes over and over again, and that they have cooking anxieties,
according to an Angus Reid survey commissioned by VH Sauces, to coincide with
the launch of their new VH Thai Market sauces.
    Canadian cooks are crying out for a mealtime makeover. Only one in three
said they are proud of the evening meal they serve. The rest reported that
they are worried that their families won't like what they are being served,
see dinnertime as just another meal, are bored with their meal selection, or
they lack confidence in their cooking abilities.
    Almost 40 percent said they prepare the same meals each week, and that
number grows in households with children. In fact, one in five households with
kids make two meals - one for their kids and one for adults, adding further
complications to meal time anxiety.
    "The evening meal should be something to look forward to; a special time
to savour, with family, friends or on our own, but this research shows that
most Canadians are just going through the motions," said Tony Angelucci, Brand
Manager VH Sauces.
    Many cited lack of time as the reason for their evening boredom, but one
third said they just did not know what to cook. Canadians may like to read
cook books and watch food programming, but when it comes to the daily reality
of life, they are looking for more inspiration.
    "VH can provide that inspiration," said Mr. Angelucci. "We're probably
best known for our Chinese sauces and last year we had a great response with
the introduction of VH Indian Market sauces, and now with the addition of VH
Thai Market sauces we can open up a whole new world of easy meal options for
Canadians who are looking to create a variety of family friendly meals.
    The easy-to-use sauces include Pad Thai, Sweet Thai Chili and Yellow
Curry. They are inspired by Thai flavours that are mild enough for the whole
family to enjoy. A variety of recipes are available for families to help spice
up old favourites or try something new.

    
    Other survey findings:

    -   40 percent of Canadians love to read cook books (including 44 percent
        in Quebec and 43 percent in Atlantic Canada)
    -   Almost one in five men claim the microwave is the key to getting a
        meal on the table
    -   One in ten Quebecers are not confident in their cooking abilities
    -   One in five Manitoba, Saskatchewan & Atlantic Canadians are bored
        with the meal they prepare
    -   When trying to create something new for a meal, one in five homes
        with kids say they are afraid the kids or spouse won't try something
        new
    -   Both homes with and without children suffer from trying to find time
        to source new recipe and meal ideas (20 percent and 25 percent)
