McGuinty Government Supports Cross Of Valour Award For Fallen Cobourg Police Officer

Urges Prime Minister To Reverse Decision Based On Arbitrary Time Limit

TORONTO, Nov. 30 /CNW/ - Community Safety and Correctional Services
Minister Rick Bartolucci is urging Prime Minister Stephen Harper to award the
Cross of Valour posthumously to the late Constable Chris Garrett of the
Cobourg Police Service for his distinguished service to the community.
"An arbitrary time limit must not prevent us from honouring a brave
police officer who selflessly gave his life to protect his community," said
Bartolucci. "If ever discretion and flexibility could be exercised in the
application process for the Cross of Valour, surely that should happen in this
case."
Bartolucci issued the same request to Governor General Michaelle Jean
earlier this month.
Constable Garrett was killed in May 2004 while responding to reports of a
robbery. His actions prevented the man convicted of his murder from carrying
out further crimes. The application for Constable Garrett to be awarded the
Cross of Valour, submitted after the criminal trial of his accused killer
ended in February 2007, was denied because it did not meet the two-year
deadline.
"In the interest of fairness to Constable Garrett's family and fellow
officers, I hope the initial decision in this matter will be reversed and this
worthy officer considered for the award strictly on the merits of his actions,
which speak for themselves," Bartolucci said.
"I am proud to join with Premier McGuinty and thousands of other
Ontarians to urge the Governor General and the Prime Minister to do whatever
it takes to reverse this decision and acknowledge the bravery and dedication
of this police officer who paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect his fellow
citizens."
