New Pavement, Turning Lanes And Carpool Lot For Busy Stretch Of Highway
SIMCOE COUNTY, ON, Aug. 28 /CNW/ - The McGuinty government is repaving
and adding turning lanes along Highway 12 to improve safety and traffic flow,
Transportation Minister Donna Cansfield announced today.
"More than 8,600 drivers use this stretch of Highway 12 every day," said
Cansfield. "Our government is making sure everyone can travel safely through
- Repaving an 18.8-kilometre stretch of Highway 12 from Prices Corners
to Coldwater for a smoother driving surface
- Adding new turning lanes on Highway 12 at various intersections
including Simcoe Road 23, Moonstone Road and Warminister Sideroad and
a new 2.5-kilometre eastbound truck climbing lane just west of
Warminster to keep traffic moving
- Adding a new carpool lot at Lower Big Chute Road near Highway 12 to
encourage people to carpool
- Replacing the deck and girders on the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR)
bridge in the Township of Oro Medonte to keep it in top condition
- Widening lanes and shoulders, upgrading intersection lighting and
adding new traffic signals to improve safety and driving conditions.
The government awarded the $20.4-million contract to K.J. Beamish
Construction Company Limited of King City. Work should be completed by fall
2008. During construction, drivers on Highway 12 will occasionally have to
share a single lane as directed by either a flag person or temporary traffic
"This section of highway hasn't had major repairs since 1978," added
Cansfield. "Once this work is complete, Highway 12 will be a better road for
residents and visitors using it daily."
Since 2003, the McGuinty government has committed $6.3 billion to
highways, roads and bridges and invested $4.9 billion in public transit,
including over $1.8 billion in GO Transit.
