MONTREAL, Aug. 28 /CNW Telbec/ - McGill University Non-Academic Certified
Association (MUNACA) advises the media that the special general assembly
scheduled for today could not proceed. A fire alarm was set off and Leacock
building had to be evacuated; thus putting a stop to the members' debate. No
vote on the employer's offer nor on appropriate pressure tactics could be held
for the 800 members present.
"It is shameful and alarming that union democracy is prejudiced by such
tactics. It is our hope that the source of this regrettable incident is not
part of the raiding MUNACA members are subjected to", declared Mrs. Maria
Ruocco, MUNACA's president.
To follow suit with this turn of events, the MUNACA Executive have
decided to call another special general assembly in the shortest delay.
Further information on the place and time of this meeting will be communicated
as soon as a room has been found.
The MUNACA Executive, with renewed conviction, maintains its proposal to
reject the latest Employer's offer and to have the mandate to apply any
appropriate pressure tactic up to an unlimited strike. The Employer's offer is
unacceptable and unfair to the McGill University support staff. Each and every
MUNACA member is only asking to be treated with respect.
"McGill University's Administration must realize that over 800 MUNACA
members came to the special general assembly today. This is a real show of
union solidarity. Our members demand a fair agreement", said Mrs. Ruocco.
McGill University Non-Academic Certified Association (MUNACA) is a non
affiliated, independent union representing 1700 support staff employees at
McGill University. These members work in every sphere of McGill University's
activities, in offices, in laboratories, at Macdonald farm, in libraries and
on campus grounds. These jobs are held in a large number by women. Seventy six
percent of MUNACA's members are women.
