McCain Foods announces sale of aseptic business



    FLORENCEVILLE, NB, Oct. 18 /CNW/ - McCain Foods (Canada) announced today
that it has agreed to sell its aseptic beverage business to A. Lassonde Inc.,
a leading Canadian juice and drinks company.
    The sale is expected to be completed by early next month.
    The company said the aseptic business is a good strategic fit for
Lassonde, which is a leader in the development, manufacturing, and marketing
of a wide range of fruit and vegetable juices. McCain Foods will continue to
produce its Old South(R) and McCain(R) brand frozen juice concentrates, as
well as its Cool Quenchers(R) .
    Under the agreement, ownership of the McCain beverage plant in Calgary
and aseptic production equipment in Toronto and Grand Falls, N.B. will be
transferred to Lassonde.
    All Calgary plant employees will be offered continued employment by
Lassonde and no reduction is expected in the workforce at the Toronto beverage
plant. However, it is estimated that approximately 25 positions in Grand Falls
will be eliminated after the sale is completed.

    McCain Foods (Canada), a division of McCain Foods Limited, employs
4,000 people in 16 food processing facilities across the country.
