Visits Trillium Gift of Life Network's Provincial Resource Center, speaks
to recipients and donor families while launching awareness poster
TORONTO, April 26 /CNW/ - Mayor David Miller visited Trillium Gift of
Life Network's (TGLN) Provincial Resource Center, and talked with organ
recipients and donor families before launching his awareness poster in honour
of National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week (NOTDAW) today.
"To speak to people who work with organ and tissue donation everyday and
to meet the people who are directly affected is inspiring," said Miller. "I
think everyone should go home and speak to their families about their organ
donation wishes - I saw today first hand that every decision really does make
a difference - every person can save a life."
Miller's poster joins the TGLN Celebrity Awareness Campaign, with other
members including Norman Jewison, David Cronenberg, Roberta Bondar and Colin
Mochrie (see our website for more).
"We are proud to have the Mayor here with us today," said Frank Markel,
President and CEO of Trillium Gift of Life Network. "His desire to want to
help, and his interest in the cause is a big boost for donation. I wish every
Mayor could see what we are doing here - it's a great step for organ donation
Today in Ontario, 1748 patients are on the waiting list. Of those,
1086 are men, 632 are women and 30 of those patients are children.
"This whole week is devoted to awareness. It's important that every
person in this city, in this province, in this country knows that each one of
them has the power in them to help save a life. It's as easy as having a
conversation with your loved ones about your wishes."
National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week runs from April 22-29.
