Mayor John Tory and R.A. Dickey keep kids reading throughout the summer with Toronto Public Library's Top Summer Reads for Kids

Book list officially kicks off the TD Summer Reading Club.

TORONTO, June 26, 2015 /CNW/ - Mayor John Tory joined Toronto Public Library to launch the TD Summer Reading Club to keep kids reading throughout the summer. The TD Summer Reading Club officially starts today and registration is now open at library branches across the city. Mayor Tory announced the Top Recommended Reads for Summertime Play for the TD Summer Reading Club today at Richview branch. R.A. Dickey, pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays, will lend his support of the library's reading list and the TD Summer Reading Club through an online and in-branch awareness campaign. TD Bank Group is the title sponsor of the program.

"Our libraries are well-loved and well-used," Mayor John Tory said. "They remind parents and children that reading, like any other summertime activity, should be an essential and celebrated part of every child's summer. Programs like the TD Summer Reading Club help keep the joy of reading alive and well, and encourage children to develop a passion for reading that lasts a lifetime."

Ranging from graphic novels to sports books to board books, the Top Recommended Reads for Summertime Play features titles by Canadian authors for kids 12 and under. The titles were chosen by Canadian children's librarians and are available for borrowing at Toronto Public Library branches.

"The Jays Care Foundation is thrilled to help promote the Top Reads for Summertime Play," said Robert Witchel, Executive Director of Jays Care. "We believe that reading, not unlike sports, is a perfect summertime activity for kids everywhere."

"Our staff love watching children discover new books, explore their own interests and show pride in their reading accomplishments," said Anne Bailey, Director, Branch Libraries at Toronto Public Library. "Participating in the TD Summer Reading Club is easy. Parents and caregivers can go to any branch to register their child. Children receive a notebook and special web code to track their reading, then throughout the summer they can collect stickers and virtual badges."

The TD Summer Reading Club is a free and inclusive bilingual program of Canadian public libraries that provides children and their families the opportunity to make reading a fun and rewarding part of their summer. The program is developed by Toronto Public Library in partnership with Library and Archives Canada and is generously supported by TD Bank Group.

"TD is committed to supporting reading and literacy programs that foster a joy of reading," said Alan Convery, Director, Community Relations, TD Bank Group. "Programs like the TD Summer Reading Club support the development of crucial literacy skills that help children succeed at school and beyond. We're very proud to play a role in that."

Toronto Public Library branches also offer programs featuring storytelling, crafts, workshops and more, throughout the summer. For more information about the 2015 TD Summer Reading Club, as well as additional reading lists and activities, please visit tpl.ca/readingclub or tdsummerreadingclub.ca.
