QUEBEC, May 20 /CNW Telbec/ - Businessman Mario Laquerre, well known in
the Québec City real estate field, pleaded guilty today to tax evasion charges
before the Court of Quebec. He was fined $81,522, which represents 100% of the
federal income tax he evaded.
The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) investigation revealed that, for the 2001
tax year, Mario Laquerre, through Fiducie Mario Laquerre, failed to declare
$261,734 in income from a mortgage overvaluation, which allowed him to evade
$63,379 in federal income tax. The main activity of Fiducie Mario Laquerre is
the administration of real estate investments.
The investigation also revealed that for the 2002 tax year, Mario
Laquerre, through 9015-7769 Québec inc., a real estate management and
investment company for which he is the administrator, deliberately failed to
declare $126,776 in income arising from the sale of a building, thus evading
$18,143 in federal income tax.
In addition to the fine imposed by the Court, Mario Laquerre will have to
pay the full amount of taxes owing, plus related interest and any penalties
"The vast majority of Canadians pay their taxes in full and on time,"
said William V. Baker, Commissioner of the CRA. "In fairness to them, the CRA
has put effective and rigorous programs in place to identify those people who
try to avoid paying the taxes they owe."
Individuals who have not filed returns for previous years or who have not
reported all of their income can still voluntarily correct their tax affairs.
They will not be penalized or prosecuted if they make a full disclosure before
the CRA takes any action or starts an investigation concerning them. These
individuals will only have to pay the taxes owing, plus interest. More
information on the Voluntary Disclosures Program can be found on the CRA Web
site at www.cra.gc.ca/voluntarydisclosures.
