March's urban housing starts on par with last year

ST. JOHN'S, April 11 /CNW/ - March's urban housing starts were on par
with last year, according to preliminary data(1) released today by Canada
Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). For the month of March, a total of
22 housing starts were recorded across provincial urban centres, compared to
24 in March of 2006. Within the St. John's metropolitan area, there were
21 housing starts recorded in March versus 24 during the same period last
year. For the first quarter, there were a total of 145 starts posted in the
St. John's region, down 10 per cent over the 161 units recorded during last
year's first quarter. Only four starts were recorded outside the St. John's
metropolitan area during the quarter and that was during the month of March.
"With more favourable weather conditions during March, there was a
rebound in the level of new home construction activity within the St. John's
region," said Chris Janes, Senior Market Analyst with CMHC in Newfoundland and
Labrador. "With a difference of 16 fewer housing starts compared to last
year's first quarter, the first quarter of 2007 was a positive one in terms of
setting the stage for the upcoming residential construction season," added
Janes.
For Canada's urban centres, total housing starts stumbled 17 per cent in
March over March of 2006. Single-detached starts fell 11 per cent to 5,537
while multiple starts of 7,044 represent a 21 per cent decline compared to
last March. In Atlantic Canada, there were 169 urban housing starts, down
39 per cent over the same month last year.
Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation conducts a monthly survey of
housing construction in urban centres of Canada with a population of 50,000
and over.
