TORONTO, Feb. 24 /CNW/ - Maple Leaf Foods has confirmed that the recall
of a small quantity of wieners initiated earlier today is largely complete.
The affected products are:
- Shopsy's Deli Fresh All Beef Frankfurters, (Product Code 20730 and
UPC 6487520730) with a Best Before date of AL22 and AL23 (April 22
- Maple Leaf Hot Dogs Original, (Product Code 22356 and UPC 6310022356)
with a Best Before date of AL23
Of the 1,100 cases of product involved, approximately 60% never left our
distribution centres and only 13% were distributed at the store level,
including only two cases in northern Quebec.
Working cooperatively with customers over 75% of all the recalled
products are now within the company's control and the balance is expected to
be completed by noon tomorrow.
"We voluntarily initiated this recall even though the risk was extremely
low, because our high level of food safety was not met. The stringent
standards we have imposed on ourselves are unique in Canada and are consistent
with the best practices in the United States," said Michael H. McCain,

potential risk was always low and would not be detected by the vast majority
