Manulife says news report of accounting probe false

TORONTO, Jan. 8 /CNW/ - Manulife Financial Corporation today said a news
report yesterday that state regulators in the U.S. were investigating
accounting practices regarding investments made by the company's US. Division
was completely erroneous.
The company said it has not been advised by any regulators - and has no
reason to believe - that any of its accounting practices are being
investigated.
"The report of an investigation of our accounting practices is false,"
said Peter Rubenovitch, Manulife's Chief Financial Officer. "We are extremely
disappointed that these false allegations made by anonymous sources made it to
print."
