Ceremony held on-site to celebrate planting of 150,000 pine seedlings in
area devastated by hurricane-force winds
WINNIPEG, Sept. 24 /CNW/ - A ceremony to celebrate the final stages of a
tree planting project will be taking place at 11:00 a.m. (CDT) today at the
reforestation site in the Sandilands region of Southeastern Manitoba. The
reforestation effort is thanks in part to a donation by Enterprise Rent-A-Car,
North America's largest rental car company. The planting, the third Canadian
project under Enterprise Rent-A-Car's pledge to plant 50 million trees over 50
years, includes 150,000 Red and Jack Pine seedlings.
The 50 Million Tree Pledge is part of an aggressive environmental
commitment that includes:
- Offering consumers the world's largest fleet of fuel-efficient
- Embracing new, clean technologies such as E85-capable FlexFuel
vehicles and hybrid vehicles.
- Funding renewable fuels research through a $25 million gift that
created the Institute for Renewable Fuels at one of the world's
leading plant research centres.
- Launching an industry-leading consumer carbon offset program that
enables customers to offset the carbon emissions associated with
the average vehicle rental - with a dollar-for-dollar company
match up to $1 million to fund additional projects.
"Today's ceremony is small compared to the majesty of the future forest
that will return because of this project," said Brian Oddy, Enterprise's Vice
President and General Manager for central Canada. "Being part of the
ceremonial planting makes me proud to be part of a company that is so
committed to these types of reforestation projects, both today and over the
The forest in Manitoba is the latest project that Enterprise Rent-A-Car
and its Canadian partner, Tree Canada, identified as an area in need of
reforestation. The two previous reforestation projects both took place in
British Columbia, the first in Lillooet in April 2007 and the second near
Kamloops in June of the same year.
In the summer of 2005, a large area of Southeastern Manitoba's forest was
destroyed by an intense windstorm. The 150 km per hour winds uprooted and
destroyed more than 180,000 cubic meters of mature pine forest in and around
an 800 hectare area surrounding the community of Sandilands, located within
the rural municipality of Piney in Southeastern Manitoba.
The Enterprise Rent-A-Car 50 Million Tree Pledge is a historic commitment
to plant 50 million trees over the next 50 years at a total cost of
$50 million U.S. in today's dollars. A private/public/nonprofit partnership of
Enterprise, the Arbor Day Foundation and its Canadian partner, Tree Canada,
along with the U.S. Forest Service, the 50 Million Tree Pledge is a long-term
commitment to help restore public lands that are badly in need of
Michael Rosen R.F.P., President of the Tree Canada says, "The trees

"I'm proud to be part of this worthwhile tree planting initiative," said
Ken Fosty, Tree Canada Community Adviser and Manitoba Forestry Association
Extension Officer. "These seedlings will provide multiple benefits for the
residents of southeastern Manitoba. Once established, tree cover will reduce
soil erosion, provide recreational opportunities for the local residents and
restore wildlife habitat. We are thankful that Enterprise Rent a Car and the
Arbor Day Foundation continue to do their part to improve our environment."
