TORONTO, Oct. 21 /CNW/ - Today, the Government of Manitoba, CropLife
Canada and key industry partners announced the launch of the Obsolete
Pesticide Collection Campaign throughout Manitoba. From October 21 to 23,
Manitoba farmers can dispose of their obsolete agricultural pesticides free of
charge at any one of 20 collection sites.
"The Obsolete Pesticide Collection Campaign gives farmers the opportunity
to safely dispose of outdated, unwanted or otherwise obsolete agricultural
pesticides during the three-day province-wide campaign," said Russel Hurst,
Director, Stewardship Development, CropLife Canada. "This program has resulted
in the collection of over 1,200,000 kg. of unwanted pesticides across Canada
since 1998 and we are happy to have found strong partners in Manitoba to help
build on that success."
The Manitoba Obsolete Pesticide Collection Campaign is an industry-led
stewardship program aimed at collecting and safely disposing obsolete
agricultural pesticides. The campaign is a unique partnership between the
Government of Manitoba, agricultural retailers and CropLife Canada to make
Manitoba farms and rural communities safer and cleaner.
"Successful partnerships like the Obsolete Pesticide Collection Program
clearly show how to take an environmental concern and find a practical and
effective solution," said Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives
Minister Rosann Wowchuk. "Farmers and retailers are committed to environmental
stewardship and protection, which is clear from their ongoing participation in
this important program."
Products destined for disposal will be accepted at designated ag-retail
collection locations throughout Manitoba. Pesticide products that will be
accepted under the campaign include agricultural herbicides, insecticides,
fungicides and rodenticides. It is also important to note the following
products will not be accepted: empty pesticide containers, spray tank rinsate,
adjuvants, treated seed, home/garden pesticides, paints, thinners, waste oils
or any other household hazardous waste.
CropLife Canada is a non-profit trade association representing the

environment in which we all live. The Manitoba Obsolete Pesticide Collection
Campaign is a component of CropLife Canada's Stewardshipfirst(TM) program that
