The Province Celebrates its Sixth Millionaire in Two Months!
WINNIPEG, March 27 /CNW/ - Elaine Friesen has a longstanding routine.
Every morning after a major lottery draw, she checks the winning numbers in
the newspaper against her lottery tickets. "I always expect to win," laughed
Manitoba's newest millionaire, "but of course, I never do."
All that changed this past Sunday morning before breakfast. Elaine, a
63-year-old Winnipeg cafeteria manager, checked the winning numbers for
Saturday's WESTERN 649 draw and one by one, the winning numbers of 8, 19, 24,
25, 26 and 27 matched the numbers on her $7 Combination Play ticket.
"It was unreal," recalled the mother of two sons. "I immediately called
the winning numbers line to check the numbers again and then I went to the
store to see how many winners there were." Finding out that there was only
one, Elaine knew that she was entitled to the entire WESTERN 649 Top Prize of
$1 Million. She also won an additional $3,000 in subsidiary prizes on her
Combination Play ticket.
"My boyfriend, Joe, was sitting across the table when I won," recalled
Elaine. "I said to him, 'I think I'm rich'. His eyes went wide, but he really
didn't believe me at first." She delayed telling her two sons who live in
British Columbia until yesterday. "When I called my oldest son, Clint, he
asked me how I was feeling. I said 'like a million dollars' and he (jokingly)
said 'Oh, did you win the lottery?'" How right he was!
While she hasn't had much time to contemplate what she might do with her
windfall, Elaine indicated that "my two sons will be happy" and travel may be
on her horizon. She likely will continue working.
Elaine bought her lucky ticket at the Petro-Canada station at 3316
Portage Avenue in Winnipeg. This is the sixth lottery prize of $1 Million or
more won by Manitoba lottery players in the past two months. One of those six
prizes - the '$1 Million a Year for 25 Years' Top Prize on MILLIONAIRE LIFE -
remains unclaimed. That ticket was sold in Winnipeg.
Revenue generated from Manitoba Lotteries gaming products and services
