LOOKING AHEAD - Robert Half Legal Identifies Practice Areas and Jobs in Demand for 2009

TORONTO, Feb. 17 /CNW/ - In a weak economy, certain specialties remain
strong. An increase in restructuring and insolvency, litigation and labour and
employment law is generating demand for legal services in these areas. In
response, law firms are recruiting professionals with relevant experience as
they move swiftly to capitalize on new business opportunities. These and other
findings are featured in the 2009 Salary Guide from Robert Half Legal, a
leading staffing service specializing in positions in the legal field.
"Law firms are in need of top talent to enhance their service offerings
and grow revenue in a highly competitive business environment," said Jonathan
Veale, LL.B, division director of Robert Half Legal in Toronto. "While some
firms are consolidating resources - in part as a response to contracting
budgets - others are hiring experienced lawyers who can contribute to building
niche practice groups."
Veale noted that corporate legal departments may be experiencing an
increase in corporate governance, securities regulatory and litigation work.
"Project professionals are being employed as a cost-effective strategy to
augment internal teams and access skills that are in short supply within an
organization." Following are in-demand positions for 2009, according to Robert
Half Legal:

    - In-house lawyers - Lawyers with at least three years of general
corporate and securities law with litigation management experience
are being recruited by corporations to help them meet ongoing legal
        requirements.

    - Restructuring and insolvency lawyers - Lawyers with five or more
years of experience handling complex bankruptcy matters, including
restructuring and litigation, are in demand by law firms.

    - Labour and employment lawyers - As organizations consolidate their
resources, there is a heightened demand for lawyers with three or
more years of labour and employment experience.

    - Litigation law clerks - Candidates with three to five years of
litigation experience are sought by law firms to provide discovery,
        motion and trial preparation support.
