LONDON HEALTH SCIENCES CENTRE WELCOMES HEALTH MINISTER AND MPPS TO PREVIEW THE NEW NORTH TOWER

LONDON, ON, June 28, 2011 /CNW/ - The Honourable Deb Matthews, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care and MPP for London North Centre; the Honourable Chris Bentley, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs, Attorney General and MPP for London West; and Khalil Ramal, MPP for London - Fanshawe joined hospital officials and staff today to preview several areas of the new North Tower at LHSC's Victoria Hospital prior to the building's official opening this fall.

The development of a new building has allowed LHSC to consolidate many women's and children's healthcare services in common, purpose-built spaces. Children's Hospital, now houses brand new spaces for the neonatal intensive care unit, paediatric inpatient unit, paediatric outpatient clinics and child and adolescent mental health care services. As a result of the new building and renovations to existing space, the Grace Donnelly Women's Health Pavilion at Victoria Hospital offers new and expanded spaces for women's health outpatient services, inpatient gynecology and obstetrical and newborn care, including a brand new birthing centre.

The expansion and renovation project, which reached substantial completion on time and on budget, includes the completion of approximately 465,000 square feet of shelled-in space in the North Tower and approximately 100,000 square feet of renovations to the existing facilities. In addition to the women and children's floors, once fully completed, the new and renovated spaces will accommodate:

  • adult surgical inpatient care;
  • specialized clinical laboratories;
  • adult mental health care;
  • ear, nose and throat clinic, endoscopy, medical day unit, I.V. therapy, and urgent neurology clinic;
  • diagnostic radiology and nuclear imaging services;
  • a 350-seat auditorium with associated teaching facilities; and
  • administrative and support space, including patient registration/admitting and cafeteria.

Infrastructure Ontario and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care worked with London Health Sciences Centre to redevelop the hospital, which will remain publicly owned, publicly controlled and publicly accountable.

Quotes:

The Hon. Deb Matthews, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care and MPP for London North Centre
"I'm excited to see first hand this hospital expansion and renovation begin to take shape, and am very much looking forward to the entire tower opening to patients. This project is one of many investments the McGuinty government has made in health care infrastructure in London. At $1.2 Billion and growing, it is the biggest in our history. It is truly making a difference for patients."

The Hon. Chris Bentley, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs, Attorney General and MPP for London West
"This is a significant project that will serve the healthcare needs of London residents and those of the surrounding areas for years to come."

Khalil Ramal, MPP for London - Fanshawe
"Seeing patients, physicians and staff, working and receiving care in this bright, new, family-friendly facility is a testament to the hospital and the McGuinty government's commitment to outstanding health care."

Bonnie Adamson, president and CEO of London Health Sciences Centre
"Construction of a new 10-storey tower at Victoria Hospital would not have been possible without the government's generous financial commitment to the project. Together we have created an environment that will allow LHSC to expand its services, increase patient volumes and continue to provide exceptional care experiences to the patients we serve. We were proud to provide Minister Matthews and our local MPPs with a special preview of the new spaces that will positively impact healthcare delivery in the city of London."
