KELOWNA, BC, April 16 /CNW/ - Sun-Rype Products Ltd. is presenting its
employees with the first copies of a new commemorative book that celebrates
the history of the company and its place in the Okanagan fruit industry.
The book, Deep Roots, Strong Branches, was conceived by Ian Greenwood, a
former general manager of Sun-Rype. Greenwood worked for the company from 1952
until 1982 and is an enthusiastic advocate for historical preservation.
"I thought it was important that the history of the company be recorded,
and I realized there were fewer and fewer of us still around from that era, so
we decided that a book should be written," says Greenwood, who worked closely
with Sun-Rype and local historical writer, editor and publisher Sharron
Simpson to make the book a reality.
The project was three years in the making and required extensive research
and interviews. The result is a richly-drawn account of Sun-Rype's 60-year
history that includes personal stories, historical anecdotes and archival
"You can't talk about the history of the fruit industry in the Okanagan
without talking about Sun-Rype, and we're really proud to have been able to
collaborate on this project and help preserve an important part of the
region's past," says Sun-Rype's president and CEO Eric Sorensen. "Deep Roots,
Strong Branches really brings the Sun-Rype story to life. The history is
fascinating, and the personal anecdotes are funny and heartwarming. It's a
great read and a beautiful keepsake."
The book was designed to commemorate Sun-Rype's 60-year anniversary in
2006. The company funded the entire venture, keeping it 100 per cent local by
hiring Quest for Success of Kelowna and Vernon's Wayside Press Ltd., to do the
layout and printing, and Sharron Simpson and Manhattan Beach Publishing to
"This truly was a labour of love," says Sorensen. "Our goal was to create
a legacy that would allow people to enjoy the Sun-Rype story for years to
come." In an effort to ensure that happens, Sun-Rype is donating copies of
Deep Roots, Strong Branches to libraries, secondary schools and museums
throughout the Okanagan.
The company has also provided 500 books to the BC Orchard Industry
Museum, which will sell them for $19.95 each. All the money raised will go to
support the museum's work.
Members of the public are invited to get their first look at Deep Roots,
Strong Branches on Saturday, April 21, 2007, when the authors will participate
in a book signing event from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm at the BC Orchard Industry
Museum at 1304 Ellis Street in Kelowna.
