"Loblaw Superstore To Be 1st CANADIAN NATIONAL RETAILER TO GO BAGLESS"

Milton, ON location to be North America's first big box store without
    plastic bags

MILTON, ON, Aug. 29 /CNW/ - In its continued effort to become a more
responsible GREEN retailer, and in response to Canadian consumer support for
environmental initiatives, the new Milton Loblaw Superstore will be the first
major grocery and general merchandise retail store in North America to
eliminate traditional plastic grocery bags at the checkouts.
In April of this year, Loblaw Companies Limited made a commitment to
reduce 1 billion plastic grocery bags from Canada's landfills within one year.
Reducing the amount of plastic grocery bags offered in stores, and offering
more sustainable choices, will help achieve this goal. Currently, Ontarians
use almost 80 plastic bags per second, close to 7 million plastic bags per
day.
"As Canada's largest grocery retailer, we have a responsibility to help
reduce waste in our communities" says Galen G. Weston, Executive Chairman,
Loblaw Companies Limited. "Opening this store with bagless checkouts is
another concrete step in the right direction."

    Innovative Shopping Experience.

    - Leading Canada's Green Challenge: Milton Loblaw Superstore will be
the first North American national retailer without plastic bags at
the checkouts. With the recent launch of PC(R) Green(R) Canada's
Greenest Shopping Bag, Loblaw's new reusable shopping bag, customers
will be encouraged to shop with reusable bags. Additionally,
customers can opt to use the PC(R) Green Box(TM) which has been
designed to fit in store shopping carts and can hold up to the
equivalent of 3 to 5 grocery bags!

Each household in Milton was mailed a complimentary PC(R) Green(R)
        Bag and a coupon for a free PC(R) Green Box(TM) with a minimum $25
purchase. Until October 6, 2007, shoppers will be offered a buy-one-
        get-one-free for the PC(R) Green(R) Bag and $1.00 off PC(R) Green Box
(TM). Shoppers may bring in any reusable bag, even from another
        retailer, for their purchases.

    - Clutter-Free Check Out Lanes: For time-pressed customers, there will
be no magazines, confectionary or other items usually found at the
        check-out.

    - Customer-Centric Experience: Milton Loblaw Superstore has a unique
improved store layout, clearer sight-lines, reduced clutter and the
addition of "Power Aisles" to clearly merchandise value and
        promotional items.

    - Easy to Understand Savings: Through simplification in the number of
price messages and signage, customers will have a better
understanding of special offers and sales.

    - Joe Fresh Style(TM): Joe Fresh Style(TM) offers affordable,
fashionable and high quality apparel in a convenient and fun shopping
environment. With new items arriving every four weeks and larger
inventory refreshers every eight weeks, there will always be an
unexpected fashion treat to be found.

great selection of food and general household goods.
