Living Green Ribbon formed in Toronto

Supporters of organ and tissue donation encourage others to register
"YES" as part of National Organ & Tissue Donation Awareness Week in
    Ontario

TORONTO, April 23 /CNW/ - Local residents are gathering together today at
5 p.m. at Queen's Park to form a Living Green Ribbon. They will hold up green
signs with a large "YES" that symbolize the growing movement to support organ
and tissue donation.
Trillium Gift of Life Network (TGLN) and The Kidney Foundation of Canada
(KFC) have been working in partnership with local volunteer groups to organize
these Living Green Ribbon events as part of their National Organ and Tissue
Donation Awareness Week (NOTDAW) activities in Ontario.
"The Living Green Ribbon event is an excellent opportunity to raise
awareness about organ and tissue donation," said Frank Markel, President and
CEO of TGLN. "We know that right at this moment there are nearly 1700 people
waiting for an organ transplant and many more need tissue transplants in
Ontario. This number shows us why we need to get people thinking about organ
and tissue donation."
Living Green Ribbon events are also taking place in nine other cities
throughout the province during NOTDAW, which runs from April 19-26 this year.
"This is the first living green ribbon at Queen's Park and it's very
special as it coincides with the 10th anniversary of my daughter's passing,"
said Diane Craig, donor family member and member of the TGLN Board of
Directors. "We are asking people to give us an hour of their time. I can think
of no better way to show support for the 1700 people currently waiting for a
transplant than by standing together at Queens Park. This ribbon represents
life, for fundamentally donation is about life, the gift of life."
The KFC began the Living Green Ribbon concept in Ottawa in 2002.
"Events like this one today celebrate the efforts of volunteers, the
generosity of donors and the lives of those who have been given the gift of
life," said Markel.
