Lights, camera…Chemistry!

OTTAWA, Feb. 1 /CNW/ - Canada's 2011 International Year of Chemistry organizing committee today launched a YouTube contest, "It's Chemistry, Eh?!", aimed at highlighting the exciting contributions that chemistry makes to society.

"We're looking for students in towns and cities across Canada who have an interest in science, and the ability to have some fun with chemistry and to convey that on-camera," says David Dolphin, chair of Canada's IYC organizing committee.

Middle and high school students are eligible to win $500, $1,000 or $2,500 in scholarship funding for submitting creative, one to three-minute videos that demonstrate the benefits of chemistry, showcase the contributions of a recognized chemist, or bust a commonly held myth. The contest runs until April 22, 2011 and a full list of rules and judging criteria can be found on www.iyc2011.ca.

Canada's International Year of Chemistry YouTube contest is sponsored by Esso-Imperial Oil Chemicals. Additional IYC sponsors include: Gold-Level Sponsor NOVA Chemicals, the Chemical Institute of Canada, the Chemistry Industry Association of Canada, CropLife Canada, DOW Chemical Canada Inc. and the Xerox Research Centre of Canada.
