L'embarquement pour l'amour fou: A collective work of art exhibited at Place des Arts

    MONTREAL, Jan. 29 /CNW Telbec/ - A collective work of art entitled
L'embarquement pour l'amour fou, created by patients from the Louis-H.
Lafontaine and Rivière-des-Prairies psychiatric hospitals, the Douglas
Institute and the Institut Philippe-Pinel de Montréal, in collaboration with
the organization Les Impatients, will be exhibited from February 5 to 18, 2008
in the main entrance hall of Place des Arts. The vernissage for the exhibit
will take place on February 12 at 5:00 p.m. with guest Mr. David Levine,
President and Executive Director of the Agence de la santé et des services
sociaux de Montréal.
This work, which stands 10 meters high and 2 meters wide, is made up of
approximately fifteen overlapping panels. The goal for those who participated
in this important project is to raise public awareness about the potential of
individuals with mental health problems and to demonstrate their commitment
through artistic expression. This event also aims to inform the public about
the missions of the organizations and establishments that were involved in the
project.
The initial inspiration for this collective work was a painting by
Antoine Watteau (L'embarquement pour Cythère, 1717). It is why project
participants choose to incorporate the theme of love to create this work, as
the exhibit coincides with Valentine's Day. The work was created in the spirit
of Outsider Art, or art "that is produced by non-professionals who work
outside of conventional aesthetic norms, who are not part of the artistic
milieu, or who, after experiencing such strong social or psychological
disruptions that they become completely isolated, embark on a creative
process." Beyond the exhibition, this project allowed patients from all four
Montreal psychiatric hospitals, as well as participants in therapeutic
workshops organized by Les Impatients, to improve self-esteem through the
empowering experience of collective creation.
