Legal proceedings by the Chief Electoral Officer under the Election Act - Five guilty pleas entered in the electoral division of L'Assomption

QUEBEC, Feb. 5 /CNW Telbec/ - Marcel Blanchet, Chief Electoral Officer of
Québec, wishes to inform the public that five guilty pleas were entered in a
case concerning violations of the Election Act.
Within the context of the March 26, 2007 general election, five
violations of the Election Act were committed in the electoral division of
L'Assomption.
While he was the official agent of Eric Laporte, candidate for the Action
démocratique du Québec, Mario Lapointe submitted a false return of election
expenses to the Chief Electoral Officer of Québec. In addition, he falsely
stated in the return that he had paid all of the election expenses. In support
of this return, the offender submitted falsified invoices, one in the name of
Sophie Grenier and the other in that of Alain Rock. These two persons had not
received any payment for the services rendered. Moreover, Mr. Lapointe paid
the cost of an election expense in the amount of $291.30 other than from an
election fund, contravening section 414 of the Election Act.
At the time of the hearing held on January 26, 2009, the offender pleaded
guilty to the five charges brought against him. He was ordered to pay fines
totaling $4,500, plus expenses.
