Law Society takes action against unauthorized legal practice



    VANCOUVER, March 25 /CNW/ - Pursuant to its statutory duty to protect the
public from unqualified, unregulated legal service providers, the Law Society
of BC has obtained undertakings or court orders prohibiting the following
individuals and businesses from engaging in the unauthorized practice of law.
    Anyone with questions regarding the right of a person who is not a member
of the Law Society of BC to provide legal services should contact the Law
Society at 604 669 2533 or 1 800 903 5300.

    Zvonimir Louis Basic, of Burnaby, BC, was offering legal services in
relation to human rights matters for a fee. Mr. Basic has undertaken to
refrain from doing so unless he becomes entitled to practise law in BC.

    Irina Alikova, CGA, doing business as I.G. Alikova and Associates Inc.,
of Port Coquitlam, BC, has undertaken to refrain from incorporating companies
for a fee unless she becomes entitled to practise law in BC.

    Angus J. Keefe, doing business as TaxCash Canada Corp., of Edmonton,
Alberta, was offering to provide legal services for a fee. Mr. Keefe has
undertaken to refrain from doing so unless he becomes entitled to practise law
in BC.

    William Yau, CGA, of Richmond, BC, has undertaken that he will not
incorporate companies for a fee unless he becomes entitled to practise law in
BC.

    Jonathan Wong, CA, of Vancouver, BC, was offering to incorporate
companies for a fee. Mr. Wong has undertaken to refrain from incorporating
companies unless he becomes entitled to practise law in BC.

    Jianwei (Jim) Zhang, doing business as Liberty Tax Service, of Vancouver,
BC, was offering to incorporate companies for a fee. Mr. Zhang has undertaken
to refrain from doing so unless he becomes entitled to practise law in BC.

    Derek Brown and Croft & Barrow Consulting Inc., of Vancouver, BC, have
undertaken not to incorporate companies for a fee unless either becomes
entitled to practise law in BC.

    Hong Van Nguyen, doing business as VHN Overseas Consulting Services, of
Vancouver, BC, was holding himself out as a lawyer and offering to provide a
variety of legal services, including litigation and immigration services, for
a fee. Mr. Van Nguyen has undertaken to refrain from doing so unless he
becomes entitled to practise law in BC.

    Mohammed B. Wanli, of Vancouver, BC, were found in contempt of court by
Justice Stephen Kelleher of the B.C. Supreme Court and ordered to pay a fine
of $7,500 for willfully disobeying a court order dated November 15, 2000,
which prohibited him from appearing as counsel or advocate, drawing documents
for legal proceedings or giving legal advice for a fee.

    The Law Society of BC was founded in 1869 and is the governing body of
the legal profession in BC. Under the provisions of the Legal Profession Act,
the Law Society is responsible for the licensing, professional conduct and
discipline of the more than 11,000 lawyers in BC.
