TORONTO, Aug. 19 /CNW/ - Adelina Cecchin, a teacher with the Greater
Essex County District School Board, was today elected to the executive of the
Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO). Cecchin (pronounced
Chekeen) is president of the Greater Essex County ETFO Teacher Local.
"Our work must continue to ensure that government and school boards
commit to erasing the discrimination that exists against elementary teachers,"
Cecchin told the 500 delegates attending ETFO's annual meeting in Toronto.
"Although we celebrate the success of the last round of bargaining our
work is not done. By investing properly in the working conditions of teachers,
we invest in quality education for our teachers and students."
Cecchin began teaching in 1990 and has taught primarily French Immersion
and French as a second language classes. She has been involved in ETFO locally
and provincially. In addition to her current role as local president, she has
been a school steward and has served on various committees, including 10 years
as a member of the local negotiating team. A former member of the ETFO Human
Rights Committee, she continues to work with the Pension Benefits Adjudication
Committee, by representing ETFO on the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan board.
The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario represents more than
73,000 public elementary school teachers and education workers across Ontario
and is the largest teacher federation in Canada.
