Landis+Gyr Sees Growth in Canada, Hires Utility Veteran in Calgary

Cooper to lead Landis+Gyr's expansion into the Canadian market

CALGARY, Canada, June 9 /CNW/ -- Landis+Gyr, the global leader in energy
management offering utilities next generation "smart grid" solutions, today
announced Canadian utility industry veteran Mike Cooper is joining as
Vice-President of Sales for Canada for Landis+Gyr's Energy Measurement
Products division.
Mr. Cooper, formerly Director of Advanced Metering Infrastructure for
ENMAX Power Corp., will lead Landis+Gyr's expansion plans in the C$2-billion
Canadian market as utilities and regulators work to increase energy
efficiency, cut consumer bills and reduce greenhouse gas emissions linked to
global climate change. Mr. Cooper will report to Gerry Kaiser, Vice President
of North American Sales for Landis+Gyr's Energy Measurement Products division.
"This is an exciting time to join the global leader in smart metering,"
Mr. Cooper said. "Landis+Gyr is underscoring its commitment to Canada as
utilities increasingly see advanced or smart metering solutions as the
foundation needed to transform our country's transmission and distribution
systems into more efficient, reliable and secure smart grid networks."
With significant technological progress and encouragement from lawmakers
and regulators, smart metering is expected to revolutionize energy management
and grid reliability across the globe. Smart metering solutions provide
utilities with a two-way flow of data required to manage energy use,
efficiency and demand response and network protection. Consumers benefit from
lower energy costs, reliable supply and, crucially, a reduced carbon
footprint.
In a recent Ontario study, researchers noted that a demand reduction of
6.5% was feasible from customers simply having access to the usage information
from smart meters.
"With Mike on board, Landis+Gyr has an advocate with a sterling
reputation and a deep understanding of the issues facing Canadian utilities
today," Mr. Kaiser said. "As utilities in provinces such as Ontario, Alberta
and British Columbia move toward smart metering solutions, Mike will be well
positioned to help them."
Landis+Gyr is currently working with utility FortisAlberta Inc. to begin
deployment of an advanced metering system. The agreement has the potential to
be Landis+Gyr's largest system deployment in Canada. The utility intends to
deploy an advanced two-way network to more than 400,000 meters.
Mr. Cooper, 46, has more than 20 years of experience in the field of
smart metering, having recently managed the smart metering initiative for
ENMAX Power, which operates the electricity distribution network in Calgary
and is wholly owned by The City of Calgary.
Landis+Gyr, whose operational headquarters is in Zug, Switzerland,
recently announced it was opening an office in New York to underscore its
commitment to the North American market, which accounts for more than a third
of its global business.
The global group also announced it was uniting its family of clean tech
companies around the world under a common brand, Landis+Gyr, a name synonymous
with technological innovation in energy management for more than a century. As
part of the brand integration, former holding company Bayard Group itself was
renamed Landis+Gyr Holdings and its subsidiaries Landis+Gyr, Cellnet+Hunt,
Ampy Metering, Ampy+Email and Enermet, adopted the Landis+Gyr name as their
exclusive operating brand.
