TORONTO, April 6 /CNW/ - Public elementary occasional teachers, members
of the Lakehead Occasional Teacher Local of the Elementary Teachers'
Federation of Ontario (ETFO), have reached a tentative agreement with the
Lakehead District School Board following a lengthy bargaining session.
"Occasional teachers are fully-qualified teachers certified by the
College of Teachers. This tentative agreement recognizes the qualifications
and experience that our members bring to area classrooms every day. Public
elementary schools could not function without the ongoing contributions of
these dedicated professionals," said David Clegg, ETFO President.
Clegg noted that Lakehead is the sixth occasional teacher local to reach
a tentative deal.
"The remaining boards without a contract need to focus on the benefits
occasional teachers bring to their communities and sign a deal with ETFO,"
"This is a good deal for our members and for the local community. Once it
is ratified, it will ensure that high quality student learning will continue
on an uninterrupted basis because of the work of qualified professionals who
feel they are respected by their employer," said Nancy Nix, President of the
ETFO Lakehead Occasional Teacher Local.
The Lakehead Occasional Teacher Local represents 200 public elementary
occasional teachers. Their contract expired August 31, 2008. Details of the
agreement will be available following a ratification vote later this month.
The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario represents 73,000
elementary public school teachers and education workers across the province
and is the largest teacher federation in Canada.
