L-3 Communications Ranked # 1 Defence Company in Canada for 2011

MARKHAM, ON, May 4 /CNW/ - Canada's leading defence and military journal, Canadian Defence Review, has released its annual survey and ranking of defence companies in Canada.

L-3 Communications, with key divisions like L-3 WESCAM (surveillance systems) in Burlington, Ontario, L-3 MAS (aircraft maintenance) in Mirabel, Quebec and L-3 MAPPS (marine control systems) in Montreal, was ranked number one in the CDR survey for 2011.

In announcing this year's rankings, CDR Editor-in-Chief, Peter Kitchen, commented, "L-3 has earned the distinction of being the very first company in the history of our magazine's survey to repeat at the number one spot and with a well managed company like L-3 it is truly an earned distinction."

In responding to news of his company's number one ranking, L-3 Communications' Chairman, President and CEO, Michael T. Strianese, commented, "Canada is an essential component of L-3's international growth strategy and there are many opportunities here."

Peter Gartenburg, L-3 Vice President of Canadian Operations, said, "We are very pleased to be selected by CDR as their top ranking Canadian defence company for 2011. We are proud of our strong record of providing a broad array of products, services and solutions to the Canadian military to support their critical missions at home and abroad and it is rewarding to have L-3's accomplishments recognized by CDR."

For 2011, CDR expanded the annual survey to include 50 defence companies from the previous 40. CDR Editor, Peter Kitchen commented,"It is a testament to the strength of the defence industry in Canada that we had no trouble at all in filling the extra ten spots."

An evaluation panel consisting of CDR editorial staff and independent advisors ranked the companies based on factors such as economic impact, innovation, contribution to the nation's security, and support of Canada's military.

The ranked companies must meet certain requirements, including having manufacturing, R&D or service operations in Canada, to be included in the survey.

There were a record number 13 new entries in the CDR Top 50 for 2011 and CDR's annual survey and ranking of Canada's Top Defence Companies, now in its seventh year, continues to be a huge success in shining the spotlight on an important but often overlooked industry in Canada.
