Kids.now Celebrates Champions for Kids

Students and their Coaches Recognized at Awards Ceremony

TORONTO, Nov. 19 /CNW/ - Kids.now will be honouring five Toronto students
for their achievements and five volunteer coaches and school champions whose
dedication has made all the difference in the lives of these young people at a
fundraiser and awards gala at the Design Exchange Wednesday, November 21.
This year's "Champions for Kids" Celebration Night is being hosted by
comedian David Gale and featuring Canadian Idol judge Farley Flex. The
volunteer program has received recognition from Toronto Mayor David Miller,
Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty, and Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
Kids.now is an in-school, after-school, leadership and mentoring program
for grades seven and eight students aimed at building their confidence and
helping them make the right choices. The program consists of weekly coaching
sessions over a 12-week period. The awards night event aims to raise money to
fund more programs for more young people.
This special volunteer program was developed in 1999 by Janet King, a
former teacher and founder of Kids.now. "We know that kids this age are making
decisions that could affect them the rest of their lives," said King who is
Executive Director of Kids.now. "I am very proud of the students we've helped,
and the dedication of our volunteers who've steered hundreds of these young
people in the right direction."
