Junior "V-Accordion Idol" Winner Hails From Edmonton, AB

Edmonton Musician Named Canada's Best Junior Accordion Player

    MISSISSAUGA, ON, Sept. 30 /CNW/ - A 17-year-old Edmonton musician has
been named Canada's Best Junior Accordion Player. Austin Kawa was the winner
of the Junior Division of the 2nd Roland V-Accordion Festival, the accordion
scene's answer to "Canadian Idol", hosted by Roland Canada Ltd. He performed
at last week's adult division Festival National Finals in celebration of his
win.
Kawa has been playing the accordion since he was six. Years of lessons
combined with coaching and encouragement from his accordionist grandfather
have turned Austin into an accordion sensation. He has won numerous
competitions, recorded three CDs and plays concerts both as a solo artist and
with his Family Band. He is excited to use his new Roland V-Accordion prize at
his upcoming performances.
The 2nd Roland V-Accordion Festival invited both junior and adult
accordion players from across Canada to submit a short video of an accordion
performance to Roland Canada between April 2 and September 5, 2008. Videos in
the Junior Division were evaluated by an expert jury and a winner was chosen
based on criteria including: technical skill, musical interpretation, and
imagination. Kawa was crowned the winner and invited to perform at the adult
National Finals of the competition where three adult accordionists hailing
from Montreal, Quebec City and Victoria competed for first-place in the adult
division.
The finalists performed at the 2nd Roland V-Accordion Festival National
Finals on September 25, 2008 at the Hansa Haus in Mississauga, ON, where Ivan
Preanicov was crowned Canada's Best Accordion Player and awarded a
top-of-the-line FR-7 V-Accordion as well as the honour of representing Canada
at the International Accordion Finals in Italy this November. Sergiu Popa from
Montreal placed third in the competition and Steve Normandin from Quebec City
took third spot.
