The Régie du logement reminds that a new tenant's right to occupy a
dwelling begins on the first day of the lease; the tenant who is moving out
does not have a day's grace to vacate the dwelling. That said, it is obviously
not possible for everyone to obtain a moving truck at the same time: the Régie
du logement encourages everyone to be polite and civic-minded and to exercise
their rights in a reasonable manner.
Thus, the tenant who is vacating a dwelling must allow the new tenant to
lay his or her personal effects in the dwelling without delay, by clearing
some rooms so they can be moved in while the effects of the former tenant are
being moved out. Given that the owner must make the dwelling available to the
new tenant on the agreed date, it is advisable that he set the terms and
conditions for the move with the tenant who is leaving and the new tenant.
Furthermore, the owner must deliver the dwelling in a good state of
cleanliness and repair; he would be well-advised to ascertain the condition of
the dwelling after the previous tenants have moved out.
Furthermore, general and specific information on tenants' and landlords'
rights and obligations are available around the clock on the Régie's
interactive voice response system and the Régie's Website at
