Josée Verner challenged to justify her cuts to culture on public stage

    QUEBEC, Sept. 16 /CNW Telbec/ - Stéphane Dion's political Lieutenant in
Québec, Senator Céline Hervieux-Payette, challenged Conservative Heritage
minister Josée Verner to justify on the public stage the cuts to cultural
programs she enacted.
In Québec City for the campaign launch of Damien Rousseau, Liberal
candidate in the riding of Québec, Mrs Hervieux-Payette challenged Mrs Verner
to end her silence.
"We saw it during the Gémeaux gala, Québec's artists have already
explained their position. In the next few days, the Liberal team will unveil
its position on cultural issues. In order to paint the complete picture, for
citizens to be able to have a clear idea of their options, the only thing
still lacking are Mrs Verner's explanations", Mrs Hervieux-Payette said.
Mrs Hervieux-Payette also took the occasion to debunk the unconvincing
arguments of Conservative leader Stephen Harper regarding cultural issues in
the last few days.
"Mr Harper is trying to make us believe that he had, in fact, increased
federal support for culture. Who is he kidding? Is he telling us that it was
to protest the excess of Conservative support towards them that artists took
to the streets in Québec City and in Montréal? It makes no sense at all!"
